When I was in Japan in 2015 I saw a guy cleaning a pedestrian overpass with a toothbrush. He was clearly a homeless person, shabby, though somehow also put together in that way the few transient people I saw there seemed to be. He was almost certainly mentally unwell but the calmness and sincerity he exuded while scrubbing the pavement made the act seem so normal, so unremarkable that at the time it didn't even strike me as unusual. Not even after I saw him there again some days later, patiently scrubbing away. That was, in his mind I imagine, his job. The thing he'd decided needed to be done. You could argue that it's a pretty useless task, but then you could probably say that about a lot of things people do. It seemed to bring him some sort of purpose and that can't be said about a lot of real jobs. So I sort of identified with him in a way. I make art, he cleans the overpass. The effect of both of these individual acts is largely inconsequential to the world at large but they bestow a sense of meaning to us that otherwise might not be there. Part of me would like to have joined in, to see if perhaps I could see things from his angle but I feel like that would have been imposing on his gig. And besides, I didn't have a toothbrush.
